Gratitude 13: I am thankful that today, for the first time in my life, I was asked to play the banjo in sacrament meeting.
I am also grateful that in the attached photo I am obscured by an accordion, to hide the evidence.
Mark knew that I was uncomfortable about this so he said, "Don't worry. It will be like the pioneers." To which I replied, "No, it will be like Holy Ghost people in the Ozarks, dancing and handling snakes."
But of course we kept it reverent. I really am grateful that reverence is always a priority in our sacrament meetings.
I am also thankful for changes in the church handbook regarding music. For example, the language that used to discourage the use of certain instruments like brass is gone. Instead, it now says:
"Bishoprics may approve the use of other musical instruments to accompany congregational singing, for prelude and postlude music, and in other musical selections."
and also
"Sacred music that is written or sung in culturally diverse musical styles may help unify congregations. Music coordinators and priesthood leaders may include a variety of appropriate musical styles that appeal to members of various backgrounds."
In general though, I have to admit that I am kind of grateful that we don't hear a lot of banjo in sacrament meetings. 😬
